The Atari 400

The Atari 400 was built round the 6502 processor at a clock speed of 1.79MHz with a 10K ROM and 16K of RAM, the display was capable of 40x24 lines for Text and 329x192 pixels for graphics.

The machine had a dedicated cassette unit for storage and retrieval of programs, there are 4 joystick ports, a serial port and a TV output.

The membrane keyboard was the big letdowns on this machine, this said, it was one of the better membranes of the time. The 400 came with Atari BASIC as standard, other languages were available including BASIC A+, C and PILOT.

All in all the 400 was a very good machine in its day with good graphics and a wide variety of software and hardware including disk drives, modem, printers.
